This little black dog has made looking goofy its calling card.
Dating back to 17th century Germany, the Affenpinscher is sometimes called the “Monkey Terrier” because of its simian-like face. (In fact, the name Affenpinscher is German for “monkey terrier”.)
The Affenpinscher is a small dog. It ranges from 9.5-11 inches tall and weighs from 6.5 to 9 pounds.
Though small, the breed is energetic and bold – it will confront anyone who he or she thinks is an intruder. They are generally considered curious and playful, but territorial around their toys and food.
The Affenpinscher was originally bred to control rat populations around homes, farms and stables.
Perhaps the most striking feature of this courageous little dog is its rough and wiry black coat. Sometimes the hair on the muzzle is gray, producing a beard-like appearance.
The breed captured a big accolade a few years ago – an Affenpinscher won Best in Show at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in 2013. Some people think they look like Ewoks from the Star Wars movies.
Just looking at them, who can argue with that?!
Until next time,
