Snow has already flown in parts of the U.S. and that brings the danger of frostbite

Frostbite happens when parts of the body partially or completely freeze. Like humans, dogs can get frostbite, too.

Dogs often suffer frostbite in extremities like their ears, nose, toes and tails. Frostbite damages the tissue, and in severe cases, the burn-like blisters can become infected and even lead to loss of the affected body part. (You can read a good description of the symptoms of dog frostbite here.)

What can you do to prevent your pooch from getting frostbite?

The basic answer is to keep your dog indoors during cold weather. If yours is an outside dog, provide a warm, dry place for him or her to shelter out of the wind.

The American Kennel Club suggests trying warm clothing like dog booties and dog sweaters especially for short-haired breeds.

What about walking your dog?

During the winter, keep the walk short. Make sure your dog is dry before the walk. The AKC says damp dogs are more vulnerable to frostbite.

While its true that northern breeds like Huskies at a lower risk of frostbite than short-haired breeds, all dogs are ultimately susceptible. Older dogs, puppies and smaller dogs are at higher risk of frostbite, according to Daily Paws.

So this winter keep your dog warm and dry – perhaps snuggling by your side in front of a toasty fire!

Until next time,

Hugs and Pug Kisses,

Candy
