We’ve all heard the sad news of the death of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom on Thursday.

What you may not know is the Queen was a big fan of dogs – especially Welsh Corgis.

The Queen left behind two corgis, named Muick and Sandy. She also had a Cocker Spaniel named Lissy. Remarkably, she also owned a “dorgi” – a cross between a dachshund and a corgi – named Candy. (It was her and her sister Princess Margaret that created the hybrid in the 1970s.)

The Queen reportedly got her first corgi in 1933 when she was just 7 years old. Over the decades she and her corgis have been photographed countless times. The New York Post published a neat collection here.

In all, the Queen owned more than 30 corgis in her lifetime. The breed has essentially become synonymous with the British royal family.

It’s not hard to see why the Queen liked corgis. Their large ears and stubby legs are adorable. The breed is known to have a friendly and energetic disposition. Corgis were originally bred to herd cattle. Their low height and agility helped corgis avoid getting kicked by cows as they nipped at their heels. There are two versions of corgis: Cardigan and Pembroke.

Don’t worry what will happen to the Queen’s dogs – her last will and testament reportedly has taken care of that.

Until next time,

Hugs and Pug Kisses,

Candy.
