A proverb is short phrase expressing a common truth or bit of advice.

Proverbs are intended to make us wiser. And because they are brief and witty, proverbs are easy to remember – even if people don’t always follow the advice given.

Proverbs are found the world over, in all languages and cultures, and across time. So, too, is the unique relationship between humans and dogs. Not surprisingly, many proverbs feature dogs in their message.

Dogs can be characterized in a positive way in some proverbs. “The greater love is a mother’s; then a dog’s, then a sweetheart’s” says a Polish proverb. Dogs carry a negative connotation in others: “Those who sleep with dogs will rise with fleas” is an Italian proverb.

Here are seven more dog proverbs to (hopefully) make you a little wiser. Included is a possible lesson we can learn:

  1. “The dog’s kennel is not the place to keep a sausage” – Danish Proverb. (Be careful where you put valuable things.)
  2. “Show a dog a finger, and he wants the whole hand” – Yiddish Proverb. (Beware of greedy people.)
  3. “The dog has four feet, but he does not walk in four roads at the same time” – Haitian Proverb. (Focus on your top priority.)
  4. “To a dog a bone has more value than a pearl” – Filipino Proverb. (In lean times, necessities are worth more than luxuries.)
  5. “As a dog returns to its vomit, so fools repeat their folly” – Bible, Proverbs 26:11. (Those who do not learn from their mistakes are doomed to repeat them.)
  6. “Do not call to a dog with a whip in your hand” – Zulu Proverb. (You are more likely to get someone to do something with a friendly approach rather than threats.)
  7. “Every dog has his day” – English Proverb. (Even if things look rough now, good luck comes to us all sometime.)

A final bonus proverb worth remembering:

“A grateful dog is worth more than an ungrateful man” – Arabian Proverb.

Absolutely! We at Pugpalooza are grateful for all our readers and customers.

Until next time,
