Pugs do shed

If you want a dog that does NOT shed, DO NOT get a pug. Fawn pugs have two coats of hair, Black pugs have one coat, but they BOTH shed. Fawn pugs have one layer of fur for the top coat, but there is a shorter layer of fur underneath. Even though black pugs have only one layer of fur, they still sometimes shed just as much as the fawn pugs. Pugs shed a lot. If you read or someone tells you that pugs don’t shed, you’re either getting misinformed or their pug is an exception to the rule. As a pug owner, you’ll have pug hair on your furniture, in your car, on your clothes, on your bed sheets (if your pug sleeps with you), etc…

Baths help with shedding

There are several ways to handle all the shedding that pugs do. The first way I handle it is by giving my pugs a bath WEEKLY. Some vets don’t recommend this, but my vet said as long as I use a mild dog shampoo and spray them with a moisturizing mist (for their fur), it was fine. It does help ALOT with the shedding. They will, however, shed in the tub so be prepared to wash your tub out after their bath.

Brush daily to help with shedding

The second thing I do is to use a dog brush or comb that is designed to help with shedding (personally, I use a furminator comb). They are designed to pull the loose hair out of your dogs coat and my pugs don’t mind it at all. These combs are available at most pet stores. I believe I paid around $20 for mine. It has been worth every penny. After I bathe my pugs, I blow dry their fur while combing them; this helps get the loose fur out. Your pug will love to be brushed/combed and he/she will love the attention they get while your grooming them. I tell my pugs, “Let’s go take a bath,” and they are standing by the tub… ready. They love to be groomed.

Vacuum daily

The third thing to help with a pugs shedding is to purchase a good vacuum because you’ll be vacuuming pretty much every day. You’ll want a vacuum for your car too… if your pugs ride with you. I currently have a Hoover, but I want to get one of the robot vacuums (you know… the ones that vacuum on and off all day by themselves) and try it. If anyone has one of these and likes it, please post about it… I’d love to get some feedback on that.

Have a lint brush handy

The final suggestion I have for shedding is to get a lint brush, mostly for your clothes. I don’t have too many problems with this, except when I wear black. Fawn pug hair shows up a lot on black clothes so keep a lint brush handy… in the house, the car, your purse, etc…

I personally don’t mind the shedding. I LOVE MY PUGS… and the shedding is part of them. Pugs are companion dogs and they want to be close to you… usually touching… so spoil them, love them, kiss them, hug them… and put up with the fur that gets on you. Think of it as love glitter!!

If anyone has any OTHER ideas about how to handle shedding, please post. We’d love to hear how you deal with the shedding.

Love and pug kisses,

Candy
