More than 55 million people live with dementia worldwide, with nearly 10 million new cases each year, according to the World Health Organization.

Unfortunately, as our dogs age they can develop dementia, too. And the risk factors for dogs and humans is surprisingly similar.

A new report from the Dog Aging Study published last week found:

  • The odds of dementia increased 52 percent with each year of age in dogs over 10 years.
  • The likelihood for dementia was nearly 6.5 times higher for inactive dogs versus those who are active.
  • Dogs with a history of brain, ear and eye disorders had higher odds of developing dementia.

The study looked at more than 15,000 dogs from a variety of breeds.

Diagnosing dog dementia can be tricky. Common signs include getting “lost” in their home or backyard, unusual changes in sleeping patterns and mood, forgetfulness, unexplainable whining, and losing their toilet training. Anxiety, loss of appetite, irritability and lack of self-grooming can also occur.

All of this is a sad thing to confront in a cherished companion. There is no known cure. You can learn more about treating dog dementia here.

We at Pugpalooza pray that one day science finds a cure for dementia – in people and in pets!

Until next time,
