Do your pugs need their own closet?

Does your pug have a lot of clothes? How about toys? Or… grooming supplies? Or… vitamins??

My pugs have almost as many clothes and bandanas as I do… so I decided they needed a place to keep their accessories, like a dog closet.

Look for an old shelf you can refurbish

I didn’t want to spend much money, so I started watching garage sales and “Buy and Sell” sites on Facebook. I spent several months looking and finally came across a lady who was advertising a “book shelf.” She wrote that the back of this shelf was no good, so it would have to be replaced. I paid very little for this book shelf and went and picked it up. (I wish I would’ve taken a “before” photo before I replaced the back of the shelf… sorry about that).

Make repairs

She was right. The back of the shelf needed replaced. I measured the width and length of the back of the shelf. I decided to go to Home Depot and look for a piece of wood I could use for the back. The Home Depot associate was extremely helpful. I told him what I bought and that the back of the shelf needed to be replaced. He showed me a sheet of plywood that was thin, but yet very durable. I don’t know how thick it was, but less than 1/2″… it may have been 1/8″. I gave him the measurements and he cut the piece to fit perfectly. The whole sheet cost around $12.00 and I have the remaining pieces to use for another project. I also grabbed two dowel rods (medium sized) and some finishing nails before I left.   I left a very happy customer!!

I took the sheet of plywood home, laid the shelf down and laid the plywood on the back. It fit perfectly. I took the finishing nails and started nailing them into the plywood. I put the nails in about every 2-3″ so the back would be very secure. This is what the shelf looked like after I got the plywood nailed on the back.

Cut the dowel rods

I had a friend cut the dowel rods for me and drill slightly into the side walls of my shelf (because I didn’t have a drill). It took him only a few minutes to do both tasks. He cut the dowel rods the width of the shelf, plus just a tad bit bigger to compensate for the drill holes in the sides. This is what the shelf looked like after we got the dowel rods in place.

Buy baby hangers for dog clothes

After I got this done, I made a trip to Wal-Mart to buy some baby hangers. I wanted the small hangers to fit the size of Molly and Dolly’s clothes and bandanas. I think I paid $1.00 for 10 hangers. I bought 30 hangers. The hangers came in pink or blue, which I love because it made it colorful. I bought some of each. When I got the hangers home, it was just a matter of putting everything on it. We hung up their clothes and their bandanas, set their vitamins on the shelf, put their dog backpacks on top, put some of their grooming supplies on the shelf, and we even put some cards on their shelf that Molly and Dolly received from some children. Needless, to say, the wait was worth it. I love it!! The girls watched me hang their clothes and they know it’s their shelf. I think they like it too!!

Finished dog closet for less than $25

Altogether, I think this shelf costs me less than $25.00 and I got to do it exactly like I wanted. I also have plywood left over. If desired, you can add doors to the shelf. I might do that later, but for now, I kinda like it open.  Here’s what their finished shelf looks like:

Has anyone else made their pugs a Dog closet??

Until next time,

Love and pug kisses,
